James has a 1st class Degree in Neuroscience from the University of Nottingham, a Masters degree in Neuroscience and DPhil from the University of Oxford in Experimental Psychology researching the pathophysiology of mood disorder. Following a period of time in industry at Merck Sharp and Dohme and a Research Fellowship at Oxford, James joined Oxford University Innovation in 2013. As a senior Licencing and Ventures Manager James works with some of the world's brightest minds, assisting them in generating impact through the commercialisation of their research. This is achieved by identifying, incubating and protecting intellectual property from the University of Oxford and two local NHS trusts, and building enduring partnerships to ensure that the best ideas are fully exploited through licencing and establishing new companies. Specialising in digital health, James works at the interface of medicine and engineering, where software and data science is used to augment how humans care for themselves and each other.
Some recent examples include the use of virtual reality to improve mental health (OxfordVR), harnessing machine learning to identify novel biomarkers of heart failure (Caristo Diagnostics and Ultromics) and integrating algorithms into hospital workflows in order to analyse a hospital’s electronic patient record system in real time to flag those at greatest risk (HAVEN).
